Dignity/Palm Beach has New Home in Lake Worth

Dignity/Palm Beach, the local group for gay Roman Catholics, has recently moved the site of its bi-monthly masses from a church in Palm Beach Gardens to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in downtown Lake Worth. “Our previous home wasn’t really central enough and we weren’t able to advertise so our membership had dropped significantly,” said Al Levy, facilitator for the group. Lake Worth is much more centrally located and St. Andrew’s has agreed to let us advertise. ”

Gene Smalling, St. Andrew’s parish administrator said that the parish was happy to be able to help. “These are particularly difficult times for gays in the Roman Catholic Church,” said Smalling. “We were glad to be able to give them a hand.”

The group’s first meeting at St. Andrews was Sunday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. They will continue to meet on the first and third Sundays of each month at 5:30. The Roman Catholic priest who officiated at masses in the past will continue to perform the rite for the group at St. Andrew ’s, according to Levy.

“We’re glad to be able to help them,” said Canon Richard Nolan, retired priest in residence and chaplain to Integrity Palm Beach which is part of the St. Andrew’s parish structure. “We have some Roman Catholics who attend Integrity and who may want to join Dignity. And the Dignity members are always welcome to join our services as well. ”

“A lot of gay Catholics move down here from the north where they attended dignity in the past,” said Levy noting that the group is seeking contributions to help advertise their presence at the new location.
